The Everlasting Arms

The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.
Deuteronomy 33:27a
Christ upholds His people in every age. As Moses came to the close of his earthly life, he spoke directly to each of the twelve tribes of Israel. He had led them out of the slavery of Egypt. He had done miraculous things that preserved them in the wilderness. He had delivered the law of God to them. He had borne with their complaining, petulant, perverse behavior. As he is about to depart, he spiritually divides to every group their due portion. Our text is part of his summary statement. This is timeless truth. It is Christological in its’ import. First, Christ is the eternal God. We know this by comparing Genesis 1 with John 1 and Hebrews 1. God created the heaven and the earth. Christ is the Word by Whom all was created. It is by Christ, the Heir of all things that God has spoken to us in these last days. Christ referred to Himself as the ‘I AM.’ Thus, He is the eternal God. Second, He is our refuge, the Rock of our salvation. He is the foundation upon which we rest and from Whom we can never be removed. He, by His Own statement maintains the security of all who are His without losing any. Third, He has everlasting arms. Hebrews tells us He is the same, yesterday, today, and forever. He is so bold as to say that no one shall be able to snatch us out of His hands. Therefore, we are utterly secure in Him.
Our great and unchanging God,
we rejoice that You are ever the refuge of Your people.
We praise You that Christ upholds us
with His Almighty arms.
