He Shall Know

And the Jews marveled, saying, How does this Man know letters, having never studied? Jesus answered them and said, My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority.

John 7:15-17

The more Christ revealed of Himself the more controversial He became. His enemies, the Jewish religionists sought to kill Him. The people were divided about Him. Some said, ‘He is good.’ Others said, ‘No, on the contrary, He deceives the people.’ They were keenly aware He had not gone through any of the rabbinical schools. He did not have their stamp of approval. He spoke as one who had authority and not as the scribes who were always quoting some other teacher. His teaching was simple, direct, and genuinely spiritual. Because it was, as He says, ‘His who sent Me,’ it sounded much different than what they were used to hearing. Christ points out that in order to know the truth of His teaching one must want to do the will of God. This would elevate their understanding above that of the schoolmen. If we have a desire to know God, to follow Him to do His will, He will not fail us. He will seal to our hearts the knowledge of His revealed truth. This will put us at odds with those who discount Christ. We will hold Him up and they will seek to push Him out of sight. Christ predicted this response. He did not let their opposition alter His message. We seek to follow Him and to proclaim Him as the One whom the Father has sent. Thus, we know His doctrine is from God.

Our Gracious Master and our God,
we rejoice that You have been true to Your message.
We praise You that it is worthy to be spread over the whole earth.
