We Believe And Know

But Simon Peter answered Him, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.

John 6:68-69

What can we know? After many people had abandoned Christ because of the things He said, He asked the disciples if they would also leave Him. Peter replied with the words of our text. His words are full of faith. He recognizes that Christ speaks eternal truth. He goes on to say what he and the rest of the disciples believed and knew, ‘that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ Why was he so certain? The disciples had observed Him at close range. They had heard His words, seen His miracles, and become utterly convinced of His identity. They had both faith and facts to back their beliefs. What would ultimately seal all they believed would be His resurrection. That would become the key element of their preaching and teaching. They would cling so tightly to this truth of the resurrection of Christ that they would rather endure horrible death than deny it and the larger truth it represented. Jesus was, in their view, ‘the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ This is exactly what we believe. For them, it was a combination of faith and fact. Therefore, they believed and knew. We also believe and know. We have heard their testimony. We have believed their stories. They saw and believed. We have not seen Him yet, but we believe. Soon the faith shall be sight and we shall see Him as He is. 

Our King and our God,
we rejoice that You have shown Yourself to us in so many ways.
We praise You that You shall continue to reveal Yourself into eternity.
