The Light Of The World

The Light Of The World

I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

John 9:4-5

Christ was clear about His role. Our text contains one of His most definitive statements of self-identification. Think of how this must have sounded to those who heard it. If we were to hear anyone say such a thing in our own context, we would perhaps write them off as deluded. This is an extravagant claim. Yet Christ made the statement and proceeded to heal the man who had been born blind. If this was the only work He did to prove His identity it would be significant. It is only one of a huge number of His miracles recorded for us by those who witnessed them. He did many more works than opening the eyes of the blind. The apex of His miracles was His resurrection. All the apostles witnessed this. It was a prerequisite for them as apostles. All these things taken together bring us to the conclusion that His claims were legitimate. This is the key issue of faith. What follows for us is to believe His claims and all that goes with them. These are life-shaping beliefs. They will affect our attitude and actions at every level and in an innumerable number of situations. If we believe He is the light of the world we will imitate Him in the spreading of His light.

High King of Heaven,
we rejoice that You are the Light of the World.
We praise You that where You and Your message go,
darkness flees.
