While It Is Day

While It Is Day

I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.

John 9:4

Christ had His day upon the earth. His incarnation was the beginning of it. His ascension was the end. This was one chapter of the whole book. There were many occasions in the Old Testament when He appeared in pre-incarnate form. The Old Testament was, in many ways, the day of the Father. Both of the other two members of the Trinity are working, but the Father stands to the fore. After Christ ascended, the day of the Spirit began. Christ referred to this in His speech to the disciples at the last supper when He said, ‘Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.’ Since His ascension, the Spirit has done all Christ predicted. This era is His day. Christ said He must work ‘while it is day.’ In this case, He is not so much referring to His era as He is to the urgency, He felt to do all He had to accomplish during the few days He had upon the earth. He uses a familiar reference so the disciples would appreciate His urgency. This was His preface to the healing of the man who had been born blind. The life and ministry of Christ had a massive influence on the people whom He touched, most particularly His disciples. They would go forth into all the world to bear witness to Him based on what they had seen and heard. We have a personal experience of Him and reiterate their stories, adding our own testimony of our experience of Him.

Our Gracious God and our Savior
we rejoice that You work according to Your divine plan.
We praise You, that in due course of time,
You will do all You intend.
