I Must Work

I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.
John 9:4
Christ was a man of action. Because He was, He ‘went about doing good,’ as Peter says. He did good consistently and in various contexts. Thus, as He passed out of the Temple after His controversy with the Pharisees, He responded to the need of the man who had been born blind. He pointed out to His disciples that the man’s blindness was not the result of sin but that the ‘works of God should be revealed in him.’ Our text follows that remark. Christ was on a mission and possessed a sense of urgency. He was intend on getting things done, thus, when this opportunity to do good to the blind man presented itself, He took it. If we observe His actions in the abundance of other examples the gospels afford us we realize He was a busy man. Even as a child, He had understood and articulated He must be about His Father’s business. This serves as the best example for us of how to imitate Him. We have opportunities to do good to others whom we encounter daily. Those people are around us at work, at home, and in the wider community. We cannot touch everyone, but we can touch some. As we contemplate Christ and His work, we can learn to imitate Him.
Our Good and Wise God,
we rejoice that You are always at work.
We praise You that everything You do
contributes to Your larger purpose.
