By His Son

And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!
Matthew 17:3-5
The Scriptures point us to Christ. When Christ was on the mount of transfiguration with Peter, James, and John, two representatives from the Old Testament appeared also. One of them was Moses, the other was Elijah. If we consider our text, we perhaps gain some insight as to why these two appeared. Historically, Moses was the giver of the law, and represents it. Elijah was the quintessential prophet. He epitomizes the bold, fearless speakers of truth. These two taken together represent the Old Testament. They are also the prophets who prepared the world for Christ. Peter remarked, ‘to Him give all the prophets witness.’ Christ, in preaching to the two on the road to Emmaus, began, ‘at Moses and all the Prophets,’ and ‘expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.’ The value of what we see in the transfiguration with the appearance of Moses and Elijah is that these ancient prophets and the messages they declared, were serving the purpose of paving the way for Christ. The opening verses of Hebrews outline this for us, ‘God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds.’ If we are going to embrace the message of God through the Scriptures, it will lead us inevitably to Christ.
Our Wise and Gracious God,
we rejoice that You have declared Your truth in every age.
We praise You that all the Scriptures,
point us to Christ, Who is the Way the Truth and the Life.
