Well Pleased 

While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him! 

Matthew 17:5 

God the Father is well pleased with Christ the Son. He says so publicly on more than one occasion. We find this same statement from the Father on the day of Christ’s baptism. Our text repeats it. How is it that the Father is pleased with His Son? He was pleased with Him in eternity when He communed with Him before the foundation of the world. He was pleased with Him at the dawn of creation when, ‘all things were made by Him.’ He was pleased with Him when, ‘the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us.’ He was pleased with Him when as a young person He was about His Father’s business. He was pleased with Him as He, ‘went about doing good.’ He was pleased with Him when He, ‘spoke as one having authority.’ He was pleased with Him as He performed the works of His Father. He was pleased with Him on the Mount of Transfiguration and in the Garden of Gethsemane. He was pleased with Him on the cross, in the grave, and as He emerged victoriously from the tomb. He is pleased with Him as He intercedes for His people. He will be pleased with Him when He returns as KING of KINGS and LORD of LORDS. God the Father is well pleased with Christ the Son. 

High King of heaven, 
we rejoice in You and in Your only begotten Son. 
We praise You that, because You are well pleased with Him, 
You accept us in Him.
