Preserve Me

Preserve Me

Do not withhold Your tender mercies from me, O LORD; let Your lovingkindness and Your truth continually preserve me.

Psalm 40:11

We desire three things from God; His mercy, His lovingkindness, and His truth. These are what hold us together. If He is merciful to us, then we do not receive what we deserve. If He demonstrates His lovingkindness to us, then He is loyal to us and does not abandon us. If He preserves us with His truth, then we do not fall into error and the effect of it. These are all important to our overall wellbeing. We desire all these things from God and would be at a loss without them. David addresses his desire for them and in doing so provides a prayer for us all. David is bringing us to Christ. It is in Christ that mercy and truth are met together and that righteousness and peace have kissed each other. He is the overwhelming evidence of God’s lovingkindness to us. Christ is the sum of all God’s manifest goodness. He was at creation and will be in the eternal state. In between, all God has done and is doing is in and through Christ. We cannot make too much of Him. We want God’s tender mercies, His lovingkindness and His truth. We find them in Christ. Thus we want more of Him in every part of life. He is the well to which we return daily and the rock upon Whom we rest. He is altogether lovely. He is our all in all.

O God of our salvation,
we rejoice You do us good in every way.
We praise You that You bring us to Christ
and keep us in Him.
