Deliver Me

Do not withhold Your tender mercies from me, O LORD; let Your lovingkindness and Your truth continually preserve me. For innumerable evils have surrounded me; my iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of my head; therefore my heart fails me. Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; O LORD, make haste to help me!
Psalm 40: 11-13
Christ is our Great Deliverer. David endured many dangerous circumstances in his life. He speaks of ‘innumerable evils.’ In his youth, he was in danger from the lion and the bear. Goliath was dangerous. Saul pursued him relentlessly and attempted to kill him. He fought in battles where men died all around him. He endured plots against him during his reign. One of the most pernicious evils he encountered was the treachery and depravity of his own heart. It took him to adultery and conspiracy to murder. David was abundantly aware of all these evils. He also understood that only the LORD, Jehovah could deliver him. He also understood that Christ, his Lord, was his immediate personal Deliverer. He had such an intimate relationship with Him that he called Him his Shepherd. When he was in dire straits he called upon Him to deliver him. We may also encounter innumerable evils. Our enemies are the world, the flesh, and the devil. These all conspire to do evil to us. Who shall deliver us? The same Christ Who delivered David is our Deliverer. He is still strong on behalf of those who put their trust in Him. He is the Good, Great, and Chief Shepherd who delivers His sheep. He is our Shield and our Defender. As David did, we also look to Him.
Our Gracious God and our Savior,
we rejoice that You deliver us from evil.
We praise You that You are utterly dependable.
