Lord And Christ

Lord And Christ

For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: The LORD said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool. Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.

Acts 2:34-36

The ancient believers had more evangelical knowledge than perhaps we give them credit for having. In his inaugural address, on the Day of Pentecost, Peter refers to David, the ancient king of Israel, and uses a quotation from Psalm 110.  It refers to God putting all of Christ’s enemies under His feet. Peter takes this reference and applies it to Christ saying, ‘God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.’ Thus, Peter is setting forth that Christ is both Lord, or King, and the Anointed One, the Savior. Peter is carrying out, in real time, what Christ had said, ‘you shall be witnesses to Me.’ When Christ had said that, He had added, ‘in Jerusalem.’ Peter’s first recorded message, was in Jerusalem. We see within just a few days of Christ’s prophecy, it began to be fulfilled in the very manner He declared it would be. As we study the history of what followed, we shall see that everything else He prophesied came to pass and is continuing to be fulfilled to this day. We have the privilege to be part of that fulfillment in continuing to teach and preach Jesus Christ.

Our Holy and Wise God,
we rejoice that all You have said, comes to pass.
We praise You that the message is still going forth,
and that Jesus is both Lord and Christ.

We Are All Witnesses

We Are All Witnesses

This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.

Acts 2:32

All of Christ’s prophecies inevitably come to pass. When He ascended from the Mount of Olives, He left His disciples with this remark, ‘But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.’ On the day of Pentecost, in Jerusalem, what He had prophesied began to come true. The Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples. They were suddenly enabled to speak in foreign languages they had never studied and were able to communicate the gospel to foreigners who were gathered together for the feast. Peter stood up and began to preach Christ. He made bold statements about the fulfillment of ancient prophecy and the resurrection of Christ from the dead. Our text is part of that address. There, he affirms that God had raised up Jesus and goes on to say, ‘of which we are all witnesses.’ Thus, Peter plants the flag for all the witnesses of Christ to this day. We stand upon their testimony. They saw Christ alive from the dead. They lived their lives, spoke the truth, carried the gospel everywhere, and died their deaths testifying that Christ is risen from the dead. We are the inheritors of that message, ‘He is risen indeed.’

Our Great God and our Savior,
we rejoice that You have Your witnesses in every age.
We praise You that we have the privilege today,
to preach Christ.

Both Lord And Christ

Both Lord And Christ

Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.

Acts 2:36

When the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples on the Day of Pentecost, He filled them with boldness to preach Christ.  Peter stood up and began to proclaim Christ to all who were there for the feast.  Our text arises from his message.  In many respects, it is the climax of his declaration.  Immediately after he says, ‘God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ,’ the hearers ‘were cut to the heart’ and asked, ‘what shall we do?’  Conviction and conversion are the appropriate responses to the preaching of Christ.  That Jesus is Lord and Savior is inherent in the preaching of the good news of salvation.  It is implicit in all that follows in life after conversion as well as life after death. There is nowhere in heaven, earth or hell where Jesus is not both Lord and Christ.  Therefore, as God commenced the New Testament gospel campaign of the Church, He put this message in the mouth of His keynote speaker.  We are simply reiterating that message.  It is the message that makes much of Christ to the end that those who hear it will believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved.

Our Glorious Living God,
we rejoice that You have exalted Christ.
We praise You that He shall return in glory
as King of kings and Lord of lords.
