A Provocative Question

…How long have I to live?

II Samuel 19:34

If we consider our question to be important, sobering and answerable, that will lead us very naturally to the conclusion that it is also a very provocative question. If I do not know when death will seize me, then I must hasten to make preparation. We do not know what a day may bring forth. I must at once, make preparation to meet the Christ, Who gave Himself to be my Savior, but Who is also prepared to be my Judge. He said, ‘I am the way, the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father, but by me.’ If I have made preparation in every other way, but failed in this, what good will all the other do me? If I have made out my will, provided for my family, divided my estate, yet failed to address the destiny of my soul, how will it be for eternity? This is a question which must galvanize me into action. I must seek the Lord while He may be found. I must call upon Him while He is near. ‘Now is the accepted time…now is the day of salvation.’ We intend to encourage the saints of God with this work, but there is always room for a gospel appeal. You are not guaranteed tomorrow. You may continue for many years, or pass away before the close of today. ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved.’ Let this question provoke you to action and lead you to embrace Christ.

Our Glorious Living Savior,
we rejoice that You stand with arms wide open
to receive us as we come to embrace You.
We praise You that You will cleanse us from every earth-gathered stain
and conform us unto Your Image.

An Answerable Question

…How long have I to live?

II Samuel 19:34

We have considered this important, sobering question. We want to consider it in another aspect. We want to be consciously aware that this is an answerable question. The answer to the question, ‘How long have I to live?’ is: not long. Psalm 90 declares that our years are perhaps seventy, or at best eighty, but that ‘it is soon cut off and we fly away.’ Therefore, time is of the essence. By all accounts, life is very uncertain. God may know the number of our days, but He has chosen not to tell us. Therefore, we should prepare for this inevitability now. ‘We’re going home to glory soon, to see the city bright; to walk the golden streets of heaven, and bask in God’s Own Light; but some of you are out of Christ, and held by many a snare; we cannot leave you lost and lone; we want you over there.’ As the ambassadors of Christ, we beseech you to embrace Christ as He freely offers Himself in the Gospel. No matter how long you think you have, it is not really that long.  ‘Behold, now is the accepted time, behold, now is the day of salvation.’ Avail yourself today of the Winsome, Waiting Savior.

Our Wonderful Living Christ,
we rejoice that Your Arms are as open as Your Heart.
We praise You that You have suffered the pangs of death,
to guarantee for us, eternal life.

…How long have I to live?

II Samuel 19:34

We considered our question yesterday from the perspective of its’ importance. Today, we want to consider what a sobering question it is. We realize that life is precious. We rejoice at the beginning of life. We count it a great joy to have a child born into the family. We are glad for another life to become part of our wider group. But the question arises, ‘How long have I to live?’ I am here today, but I may be gone tomorrow. Death does not stand upon ceremony. It seizes its’ prey without warning and carries it away without fear or favor. Death arrives in an instant and leaves behind it a permanent condition which we can in no way reverse. A soul may be of great age, or have only arrived upon this scene of time a few hours ago, yet death may seize either one, or both without warning. This is what makes our question so sobering. I am alive and well today, but I may be gone tomorrow. This brings us to careful, conscientious reflection. I may face Christ today, tomorrow, or He may grant me many more years. Regardless, I must face this very sobering question. Here is a place where I cannot afford to trifle. Death may arrive at any moment of the day or night, whether I am ready or unready. Therefore, I must soberly consider the question, ‘How long have I to live?’

Our Gracious God and Our Savior,
we praise You that You give us the opportunity
to consider these important subjects.
We rejoice that in Your wisdom and knowledge
You will bring us to right conclusions.

Catechism:  Westminster Shorter Catechism Question #21

Who is the Redeemer of God’s elect?

The only Redeemer of God’s elect is the Lord Jesus Christ, who, being the eternal Son of God, became man, and so was , and continueth to be, God and man in two distinct natures, and one person, forever.

1 John 14:6. Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Acts 4:12. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. 1 Timothy 2:5-6. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
2 Psalm 2:7. I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Matthew 3:17. And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Matthew 17:5. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. John 1:18. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
3 Isaiah 9:6. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Matthew 1:23. Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. John 1:14. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. Galatians 4:4. But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law
4 Acts 1:11. Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. Hebrews 7:24-25. But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
