A Sobering Question

A Sobering Question

A Sobering Question

…How long have I to live?

II Samuel 19:34

We considered our question yesterday from the perspective of its’ importance. Today, we want to consider what a sobering question it is. We realize that life is precious. We rejoice at the beginning of life. We count it a great joy to have a child born into the family. We are glad for another life to become part of our wider group. But the question arises, ‘How long have I to live?’ I am here today, but I may be gone tomorrow. Death does not stand upon ceremony. It seizes its’ prey without warning and carries it away without fear or favor. Death arrives in an instant and leaves behind it a permanent condition which we can in no way reverse. A soul may be of great age, or have only arrived upon this scene of time a few hours ago, yet death may seize either one, or both without warning. This is what makes our question so sobering. I am alive and well today, but I may be gone tomorrow. This brings us to careful, conscientious reflection. I may face Christ today, tomorrow, or He may grant me many more years. Regardless, I must face this very sobering question. Here is a place where I cannot afford to trifle. Death may arrive at any moment of the day or night, whether I am ready or unready. Therefore, I must soberly consider the question, ‘How long have I to live?’

Our Gracious God and Our Savior,
we praise You that You give us the opportunity
to consider these important subjects.
We rejoice that in Your wisdom and knowledge
You will bring us to right conclusions.
