Limited Faith

Limited Faith

While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house who said, Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further? As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, Do not be afraid; only believe.

Mark 5:35-36

Faith is often limited. In the text before us we see an example of such limitation. Christ was on His way to the house of Jairus, whose daughter was at death’s door. There was a hesitation in the procession while Christ had an interchange with the woman who touched the hem of His garment to receive healing of her issue of blood. While He was still speaking, some came from Jairus’ house with the words, ‘Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?’ This is the expression of their limited faith. In human terms and according to normal logic, what they were saying was quite sensible. Once the child had died, they concluded there was no more anyone could do, no matter how great they were. Their faith in Christ was limited by what they understood. We are often similar in our faith. We rely heavily upon what is normal, logical, and humanly sensible. Christ’s power supersedes all those things. He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we can ask or think. The more we know of Him, the more our faith increases.

Our Gracious Savior and our God,
we rejoice that You are all powerful.
We praise You that You overcome
our limited faith.

And He said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.

Mark 5:34

Christ rewards faith. The woman with the issue of blood had suffered with her affliction for twelve years. Mark relates she, ‘had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse.’ All she wanted was healing and all she sought was to touch the hem of Christ’s garment. She crept close to Him in the crowd, touched the hem, and felt the healing immediately. Christ stopped the procession, called her forth, and commended her faith. His final remark was, ‘Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.’ He both commended and rewarded her faith. She desired healing, had faith that Christ could heal her, acted on that faith and received her heart’s desire. Christ has rewarded faith for centuries. Read the histories of the heroes of the faith, see how Christ rewarded them and is yet rewarding them. We believe and have faith in Christ. If He has rewarded their faith, He will reward ours. He is the ever faithful, never-failing God.

Our Great God and our Savior,
we rejoice that You reward faith.
We praise You that You have given us
the faith that You reward.

Faith Revealed

And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, Who touched My clothes? But His disciples said to Him, You see the multitude thronging You, and you say, Who touched Me? And He looked around to see her who had done this thing. But the women, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. And He said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.

Mark 5:30-34

Christ has a way of bringing faith to the fore. In the passage before us, Christ stops and asks ‘Who touched my clothes?’ He realized that power had gone out of Him. The disciples pragmatically asked, ‘You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, Who touched Me?’ Christ wanted to engage the woman directly. ‘But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.’ Christ responded, ‘Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.’ Thus, Christ revealed her faith. It is so with us. We have faith. We believe Christ, His promises and His Almighty Power. We are often like the woman. We want Christ to act, but are not seeking the spotlight. Yet Christ has a way of bringing our faith out into the open and revealing it for being what it is, true faith in Him. We may feel like the woman, ‘fearing and trembling,’ yet Christ does not reveal our faith to berate and mock us, but rather to show others what faith is and how it behaves. If we have sought Christ by faith in secret, we should not be surprised to see Him reveal our faith for His glory.

Our Holy and Wise God,
we rejoice that You do all things well.
We praise You that You reveal faith,
to accomplish Your will.
