The Armies Of Heaven

And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses.

Revelation 19:14

When Christ returns He is not alone.  Our text indicates that He has an army at His back.  This is not the only reference to this incident.  Jude quotes Enoch, the seventh descendent of Adam as saying, ‘Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints…’  That tells us that the advent of Christ to execute judgment is not new knowledge.  Rather, from the early days of humanity the idea of Christ’s coming in judgment has been a recurring theme.  We should understand this and the implications of it.  Both Jude and John make clear statements about the purpose of Christ’s return with this army behind Him.  John says, ‘in righteousness He judges and makes war.’  The remaining portion of Revelation 19 goes into graphic detail about what Christ will do.  It is well worth the time to look it up and read it in its’ entirety.  The title which Christ bears as He returns is KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.  This is an unmistakable proclamation of His Authority.  He Who came as Savior now returns as Lord.  For believers this is the best of all news.  This is the beginning of a very bright future.  We look forward to this return.  With all the other waiting people, we say, ‘Even so, come, Lord Jesus.’

Our Glorious Living God,
we rejoice at the prospect of Christ’s return.
We praise You that He will come with power and great glory,
and will accomplish all Your eternal purposes.

Heaven Opened

Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse.  And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True,  and in righteousness He judges and makes war.

Revelation 19:11

John’s book is ‘the Revelation of Jesus Christ.’  As such, he reveals Christ in various scenarios which occur at the end of the world.  One of the most striking scenes occurs in the passage surrounding our text.  John says, ‘now I saw heaven opened.’  He sees the exalted, triumphant Christ Who is returning as He promised in such a way that ‘every eye will see Him.’  There is no reasonable purpose to consider John’s description in any other way than the plain sense in which we understand language, which includes metaphors and similes mixed together with very literal language.  What is very apparent from the whole of the passage is that Christ’s return is with purpose and cataclysmic to His enemies.  These events remove all controversy and conjecture about Who Christ was and is.  They are the events which subdue all human governments and right the wrongs which humanity has perpetrated.  It will be catastrophic to be on the opposing side against this, Kings of Kings and Lord of Lords.  His day is coming.

Our Gracious Master and Our God,
we rejoice that Christ is King and Lord.
We praise You for the coming day,
when He shall reveal Himself to do judgement and justice.

‘I Will Come Again’

‘I Will Come Again’

‘I Will Come Again’

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

John 14:3

Revelation 19:11

The Return of Christ is inevitable. John paints the picture for us of the powerful, glorious, return of Christ as simple, sober, pre-written history. This is not a matter of question. We ought not think that John is alone in his assertion that Jesus is coming again. On the night before Christ went to the cross, He declared in no uncertain terms, ‘I will come again.’ Christ was, by no means, the first to make this assertion. Jude, quoting ‘Enoch, the seventh from Adam’ as having ‘prophesied…saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten, thousands of His saints….”’ If we subscribe to the Bible in any real way whatsoever, we accept the inevitability that Jesus is coming again. The recurring theme of I Thessalonians is that Christ will return. From the ancient prophets to the New Testament Apostles, all agree, and we with them, that Christ will inevitably return. The logical follow-on of this Return is that He will do judgment and justice. He will ‘avenge His elect.’ He will ‘separate the sheep from the goats.’ He will accomplish His Grand and Glorious Purpose to set the crooked straight and to make up that which is lacking. Today, let us look forward to this Grand, Glorious, Inevitable Return. ‘Every eye shall see Him.’  He has never failed to fulfill all that He has promised, nor shall He fail in this.

Our most Glorious, Coming, Lord,
we rejoice that You, without fail, will return.
We long for that day when You will meet
every Divinely appointed expectation.
