‘With Power and Great Glory’

‘With Power and Great Glory’

‘With Power and Great Glory’

Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

Matthew 24:30

Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.

Revelation 19:11-13

The Return of Christ is a powerful return. The first Advent of Christ was far different. The Humiliation of Christ was His ‘being born and that in a low condition.’ He lived the whole of His earthly life in humility, poverty, obscurity, and servitude. He endured opposition, insult, indignity, and degradation in His death. He ‘continued under the power of death for a time.’ All of that came to an end with His Resurrection. Whereas the Gospels present Him as ‘gentle Jesus, meek and mild’. Our text, and the passage which surrounds it, presents Him as The Conquering King. His Return is powerful because of the manner in which He comes. He returns as ‘King of Kings and Lord of Lords.’ He returns in righteousness to judge and make war. ‘Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.‘ This is the Powerful King. He appears no longer as ‘gentle Jesus, meek and mild.’ The value of this for us, is that we see and embrace a Whole Christ. In Christ we see the ‘Sum of all Perfections.’ In Him, ‘mercy and truth are met together, righteousness and peace have kissed each other.’ He came once as the Servant. He will come again as the Sovereign. We bow to Him now by choice or we will bow to Him then without choice. Today, let us spend some time meditating upon this Christ, Who will come with power and great glory.

Our Glorious, Coming King,
we look forward to the day,
when You will show Yourself, ‘King of Kings and Lord of Lords.’
Until that day, keep us faithful to ever look to You.

Revelation 19:11a

The Return of Christ is a visible return. John, in writing this Revelation of Jesus Christ, has clear insights into the future. Because he does, he describes simply what he sees. Having said that, John’s vision will eventually become our reality. The rest of the Scripture bears testimony to the visible return of Christ. When Christ ascended from the Mount of Olives, as Luke records it in Acts 1, the testimony of the angels was, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” Paul testifies, ‘For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.’ John declares, ‘Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.’  All these texts, from these various witnesses, harmonize in concert to this one point, that the Return of Christ is a visible return. Of what spiritual value is this to us? This is of value to us, because it is visual verification that our faith has not been in vain. This is a visual confirmation to us that everything else which Christ and the Bible said is true. The actual sight of Christ, and the prospect of it, gives us a present hope. We may live to see this glorious return with our own eyes. More than that, every rising sun brings us one day closer to the day ‘when the faith shall be sight.’ As we continue our contemplation upon the return of Christ, let us dwell today upon the blessed thought that, ‘every eye shall see Him.’

Our Glorious, Coming Christ,
how we look foward to the day,
when we shall see You Face to face.
‘Even so, come Lord Jesus.’

The Return of the King

Revelation 19:11-13

Christ reveals Himself to us throughout the Scripture in many forms. Each form gives us greater insight into His Holy Character. We behold Him as the Creator, the Lamb of God; the Captain of the Lord’s Hosts; the Lion of the Tribe of Judah; the Prophet, Priest, and King of HIs People; the Root and Offspring of David; and the Bright and Morning Star. Revelation brings us to the resounding crescendo of the symphony. Here we behold Christ in His Glory. Our text for today, gives us a graphic picture of Christ as The Returning King. Let us never forget that this is Who and What He is. We may speak in eloquent language of ‘gentle Jesus, meek and mild.’ We may admire His patience; His longsuffering; His grace; His mercy; and His lovingkindness. With that, we also must include His justice; His righteousness; His truth; and His strength. When Christ returns, He shows Himself to be ‘King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.’ For the next several days we are going to spend some time considering Christ as The Returning King. He is utterly worthy of our consideration in this form of His revelation of Himself. Here is Christ, no longer in His Humiliation, but now in His Exaltation. Here is Christ in His Visible, Powerful, and Inevitable Return. Here is a sight of Christ that is utterly captivating. He is the Once and Future King. ‘O, come let us adore Him.’

High King of Heaven,
we rejoice that You will finish what You have started.
We look forward to the day, ‘when the faith shall be sight.’
Until that day, lift us up that we might see Your coming Glory.
