Rejoicing in God’s Salvation

But I have trusted in Your mercy; My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation.

Psalm 13:5

Because, as one of my friends says, ‘This life is a vale of tears,’ we desire things that will cause us to rejoice. We may find many small things that cause us to rejoice in heart. The birth of our children, small successes in our labors and opportunities to help people, are all causes for heart-rejoicing. Our text for today cites one great thing that is cause for heart-rejoicing, that is God’s salvation. The Psalmist says, ‘My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation.’ One of the most wonderful aspects of this thought is the Person who is the Author and Finisher of that salvation. It is no less a person than the Christ of God who is Our Savior.

We love heroes. Here is the hero of all heroes. Christ has faced sin, suffering, death and hell, and countered them all on our behalf. It is in every respect ‘His salvation.’ Having said that, this is a salvation to rejoice our hearts. If we consider our doom, our deserts, and our desperation, it magnifies the value of this salvation. I was doomed but am redeemed; deserved damnation but shall receive a diadem; was desperate, but am accepted in the Beloved. Everything else I will have today, or any day, is of lesser importance than this, ‘that Christ has regarded my helpless estate, and has shed His own blood for my soul’. Child of God, today, in the face of anything to the contrary, rejoice that your name is written in the Lamb’s book of life, by His Own Eternal Hand.

Our Great God and Savior,
We rejoice in You
And Your gift of salvation.
