What God Will Not Allow

The LORD will not allow the righteous soul to famish, But He casts away the desire of the wicked.

Proverbs 10:3

There are certain things God will not tolerate. We tend to think of that idea in the context of His Holiness, and that concept certainly runs throughout the Scripture. He does not allow wickedness to go unchecked nor does He allow sin to go unjudged. Our text today looks at something which God will not allow from a slightly different perspective. It clarifies He will not allow the righteous soul to famish. What most immediately comes to mind is Christ, the Good, Great and Chief Shepherd, as Psalm 23 displays, and the very truth to which our text alludes.

To ‘famish’ is to be utterly destitute and to want or lack. Christ’s ultimate success is tied, by His Own Hand, to the success and profiting of His people. To that end He will see to it that their testimony is, ‘the Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.’ I shall not want in life, for He knows all of which I stand in need;  ‘He leads me beside the still waters; He restores my soul; He leads me in the path of righteousness, for His Name’s sake.’ Even in peril, He will not allow my soul to famish. In ‘the valley of the shadow of death,’ He is with me. No, I shall not want in life, nor shall I want in death, nor shall I want in eternity, for Christ shall not allow the soul of the righteous to famish. Here is hope and strength for today, and every day. Jesus never fails. He will never allow the soul of the righteous to famish. That means there is tremendous hope for the children of God in every circumstance.

We rejoice today, O God,
In your unending, unswerving faithfulness,
to us, Your Redeemed.
