The Eyes and Ears of God

The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their cry.

Psalm 34:15

If God is Omnipresent and Omniscient, why should this text have particular value to us? We might say that, inasmuch as He sees all, and knows all, that such a text would be a given. However, David wrote this psalm when he was in a fearful situation. He had resorted to the desperate course of playing the madman to escape from the clutches of Abimelech. The shepherd had become the sheep in the presence of the wolf and stood in dire need of deliverance. Because God had affected that deliverance, our text is a portion of David’s testimony; ‘The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry.’ This is our testimony as well. How often do we find ourself in some fiery circumstance, perhaps life-threatening, perhaps not, but alarming enough to put us in genuine fear. In such circumstances we need our Champion to see and hear us; and Christ does. We are pitiful, bleating sheep, unable to withstand the avenging wolves which beset us. We are beset and beleaguered. Christ Our Shepherd, both sees our desperate condition, and hears our plaintive cries. Christ will not lose even the smallest and weakest of His Sovereignly Elected Flock. No matter how obscure we feel ourselves to be; no matter how feeble and weak are our cries, Christ both sees and hears. The natural conclusion is, that He will also act. He did for David. He has for other saints. He will for you.  Look today to the Christ Who sees you and hears your cry.

We rejoice in You today,
O Christ, that You both
see and hear us where we are.
