The True Kingdom
The True Kingdom
Thy Kingdom come.
Matthew 6:10
It is the nature of petty tyrants to tout the glory of their earthly dominions. They vaunt themselves and build their monuments to tell all the world of their accomplishments, and to trumpet their own importance. By contrast to Christ, the True King, they are like ‘fools who long to play Shakespeare,’ (to borrow a phrase from Mr. J.I. Packer). Christ is the True King, and King above all Kings. As such, He has a Kingdom. That Kingdom ‘rules over all.’ It exceeds all other kingdoms, and surpasses them in power and glory. It is such a Kingdom as requires no edifices, for it dwells in the hearts of all of the redeemed of all ages. It transcends time, and even space. It needs no grand monuments for, ‘the heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament showeth His handiwork.’ There is no tiny speck of a planet, however far-flung it may be, in the farthest reaches of the universe that is not under the Rulership and Sovereignty of this King, and this Kingdom. Age upon age, civilization upon civilization, kingdom upon kingdom have all waxed and waned, yet the Kingdom of Christ has continued, and shall yet continue, going from strength to strength. ‘Jesus shall reign where’er the sun does his successive journeys run. His Kingdom spread from shore to shore, ’til moons shall wax and wane no more.’ Let us today rejoice that Christ, not man, is King, and that His Kingdom shall never end.
High King of Heaven, Yours is an Everlasting Kingdom,
and we are Your willing subjects.
We pray that You, by the power of Your Grace,
will enable us to evermore advance Your Kingdom.
