‘All Things Under His Feet’

And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church….

Ephesians 1:22

The Apostle Paul is in the process of expounding the supremacy of Christ.  As he does so, he explains that one of the outstanding characteristics of God’s exaltation of Christ is that, ‘He put all things under His feet.’  This harks back to an ancient prophecy by David in Psalm 110.  ‘The Lord said unto my Lord, sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.  The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.’  This points out something of which we tend not to speak very often: the subduing of the enemies of Christ.  Paul lays this out at some length in Philippians 2 when he writes, ‘Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above very name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, things in earth, and things under the earth.’  This concept does not pose any issue for the people who acknowledge that Christ is Lord.  It poses grave issues for those who refuse to acknowledge Him and all His claims.  What will be the end of that refusal?  Christ will still rule, and every knee will indeed bow, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.  This is a statement that does not rest on the basis of our own authority, but on all that the Scripture indicates about the Rulership of Christ; that He is indeed the once and future King.  Therefore, repent and believe the Gospel.  Embrace Christ as Savior and acknowledge Him as Lord.  Now is the accepted time.

High King of Heaven,
we rejoice that You will indeed reign forever and ever.
We praise You that we are Your willing subjects,
made so by the work of Your Holy Spirit.
