The Throne

And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him.
Revelation 22:3
God rules, and Christ reigns. As John describes the eternal state, he is forward to set forth the facts about what he sees. Part of his description is of the various elements which comprise ‘the great city, the holy Jerusalem.’ Within that place, as John describes it, the Presence of God dwells and Christ sits enthroned. As John puts it, ‘the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it.’ This is the fulfillment of David’s ancient prophecy. ‘The Lord said to my Lord; Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool.’ Paul reiterates the same prophecy when he writes, ‘Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. What is most important for us to derive from these prophecies is that in the eternal state God Alone rules, and Christ reigns. This puts all human authority into perspective. While it is true that ‘the powers that be are ordained of God,’ the fact is they are, at best temporal and temporary. At the moment, especially in our own cultural, and political situation, we observe many people and parties striving for political power, prestige, and preference. Their day is short, their influence is scant, their power is paltry. The Throne of God and of the Lamb shall never pass away. This is leadership that endures. This is real authority.
Our Living, Sovereign God,
we rejoice that You do indeed rule over all things.
We praise You that Christ sits upon the Throne,
and that we can say of Him,
‘worthy is the Lamb!’
