The Words Of Eternal Life

Then Jesus said to the twelve, Do you also want to go away? But Simon Peter answered Him, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.

John 6:67-68

Not everyone who heard Christ followed Him. As He revealed more of His message people left. His message of being the bread of life and the logical implications of it offended many. He went so far as to say, ‘whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.’ When He had explained that and went on to expound more about Himself as the bread, along with hard spiritual truths about salvation, ‘…many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more.’ Christ asked the twelve disciples if they also would leave. Peter replied with the words of our text. What Peter and the rest recognized was that Christ spoke truth and proved the truth by His works. Most recently He had fed 5,000 and walked on water. The disciples had seen these works and those which had preceded them. They would behold more works later, including His resurrection. Because of what they saw and heard they believed. They could not walk away from Him. They recognized there was nowhere else to go. We have heard the words of Christ. We have seen His works as the evangelists have narrated them. We believe He is the Bread of life. Therefore, we follow Him. Each day brings us a new opportunity to feed upon Him.

Our Gracious God and our Savior,
we rejoice at how You have revealed Yourself to us.
We are convinced that You have the words of life.
