Scripture:

Isaiah 46:8-11

Remember this, and show yourselves men: bring it again to mind, O ye transgressors. Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:  Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.

John 6:35-40

And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.  But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not. All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Matthew 6:9-13

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: f For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Sermon:  Your Will Be Done – Tomm Tice

  1.  God is very clear about His Own will.
  2. Christ’s will is to do the will of His Father.
  3. Christ teaches us to do as He does.

Catechism:  Westminster Shorter Catechism Question #24

How doth Christ execute the office of a prophet?

Christ executeth the office of prophet, in revealing to us, by his Word and Spirit, the Will of God for our salvation.

1 Luke 4:18-19, 21. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruispreach the acceptable year of the Lord…. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. Acts 1:1-2. The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: Hebrews 2:3. How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him
2 John 15:26-27. But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning. Acts 1:8. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. 1 Peter 1:11. Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
3 John 4:41-42. And many more believed because of his own word; And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world. John 20:30-31. And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

Scripture: Isaiah 46:3-5

“Listen to Me, O house of Jacob, And all the remnant of the house of Israel, Who have been upheld by Me from birth, Who have been carried from the womb: Even to your old age, I am He, And even to gray hairs I will carry you.   I have made, and I will bear; Even I will carry, and will deliver you. “To whom will you liken Me, and make Me equal And compare Me, that we should be alike?…”

Sermon:  Christ’s Preserved People – Tomm Tice

  1. Christ will preserve us because He is the Self-Existent, Immutable God.
  2. Christ will preserve us because He has created us.
  3. Christ will preserve us because He is Able.

Catechism:  Westminster Shorter Catechism Question #9

What is the work of creation?

The work of creation is, God’s making all things of nothing, by the word of his power, in the space of six days, and all very good.

1 Genesis 1:1. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Psalm 33:6, 9. By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth…. For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast. Hebrews 11:3. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
2 Genesis 1:31. And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

‘Ever…With the Lord’

Even to your old age, I am He, And even to gray hairs I will carry you! I have made, and I will bear; Even I will carry, and will deliver you.

…And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

Isaiah 46:4 & I Thessalonians 4:17b

We have spoken for the past few days, of Christ’s preservation of His people. That theme has brought home to us great comforts and glorious encouragements. There is one that yet we would set before you who read our little work. Christ, the Great I Am, Who made us, has promised to uphold us in every way throughout all the days of our life, until the day He brings us into His very Presence in His Heavenly Kingdom. From His Presence we shall never more depart. Our text for today puts it this way: ‘And so shall we ever be with the Lord.’ Here is where we find our final home. For us, who are Christ’s there is no real home apart from His Presence. We walk through this world as strangers and pilgrims. ‘We spend our years as a tale that is told.’ We take up our cross. We bear it and follow in the footsteps of Jesus, year after year, knowing that at the end of these few days we spend upon the earth we will lay it down, climb the golden stair, see Our Savior, Face to face, ‘and so shall we ever be with the Lord.’ It is unto this glorious conclusion that Christ preserves us. It is the Presence of Christ that makes heaven, Heaven; that makes glory, Glory; and that makes the Marriage Supper of the Lamb a feast indeed. ‘And so shall we ever be with the Lord.’

Our Glorious Saving God,
we rejoice that You will sweep us into Your very Presence.
We praise You that before us lies a glorious future
where ‘we shall ever be with the Lord.’

His Presence, Our Preservation

His Presence, Our Preservation

His Presence, Our Preservation

Even to your old age, I am He, And even to gray hairs I will carry you! I have made, and I will bear; Even I will carry, and will deliver you.

…For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Isaiah 46:4 & Hebrews 13:5b

As we continue our meditation upon Christ’s Preservation of His people, we come to consider the relation between the Presence of Christ and our preservation. It was the Presence of Christ which guaranteed the preservation of Israel at the Red Sea. The Presence of Christ preserved Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. The Presence of Christ preserved Daniel in the lion’s den. The Presence of Christ preserved the disciples on the stormy Sea of Galilee. These are only a few examples of the many we could set forth. The pattern appears clearly. It is the Presence of Christ which guarantees the preservation of His people. This is enormously encouraging for us. If we connect the text upon which we have been meditating for the past few days, with the text from Hebrews, we arrive at the conclusion that this is a New Testament promise with Old Testament foundations. This supports a unified view of Scripture. Christ is its’ Message from beginning to end. His Presence guarantees the preservation of His people from Genesis to Revelation and in every age reflected therein. Here is our high ground: “For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’”

O, Great God of Might,
we rejoice in Your Never Failing Strength.
We praise You that by Your Almighty Hand,
You uphold Your feeble, frail and failing people
and transform us into the Lions of God.

‘Even To Your Old Age….’

‘Even To Your Old Age….’

‘Even To Your Old Age….’

Even to your old age, I am He, And even to gray hairs I will carry you! I have made, and I will bear; Even I will carry, and will deliver you.

Isaiah 46:4

Time takes its’ toll upon all of us. We may do many things to try to mitigate the effects of it. We may eat healthy, exercise, keep ourselves busy in worthwhile endeavors, and make a concerted effort to combat the effects of aging, yet they will come regardless. As we age, we begin to struggle in areas which used to come more naturally and easily for us. In fact, as the effects of time take their toll upon us, we are much less able to rely upon the natural strengths and abilities upon which we have relied in the past. As we are less able to rely upon those natural strengths and abilities, where will we look for strength? We look to the same place that all of the people of God have always looked. We look to Christ. Christ makes this promise to us regarding how long He will carry, bear, and deliver us; He says, ‘Even to your old age…’ and, ‘even to gray hairs.’ This is one of the greatest comforts and assurances which we can enjoy. The Self-existent, Unchangeable, Creating Christ is utterly Able to uphold us throughout all the days of our life. He has never failed any of His Blood-bought people. He will not fail us. We may rest utterly upon His Almighty Arm. He has made and He will bear. He will carry and will deliver us, all the way through life, and to the doorstep of an endless eternity.

Our Upholding and Sustaining God,
we praise You that Your strength does not fail.
We rejoice that You are utterly faithful to preserve all of us,
Your people, unto our final hour.
